Tirumala is the seventh of seven hills above the town of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. The Venkateswara temple on it takes between fifty and a hundred thousand people a day, and far more at festivals. The image in the sanctum is said to predate any record of its installation. The vimana over it is covered in gold. Many who come have taken a vow and have their heads shaved before darshan. The hair is collected, auctioned and sold internationally, and pays for a large part of the trust's schools and hospitals.

Nowhere else combines this scale with this degree of organisation. The queue complex, the free meals, the accommodation and the transport up the hill run like infrastructure because they are infrastructure. The temple is also one of the richest religious institutions anywhere, and what it does with that money is a matter of public record in Andhra Pradesh.

Darshan is booked through Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, online or at counters, in timed slots. Free and paid queues both exist and both take hours. You can drive up, take a bus, or walk the Alipiri steps, which is about nine kilometres and 3,550 steps and is what many pilgrims do. Avoid Brahmotsavam in September or October unless crowds are the point.

   The Venkateswara temple at Tirumala is the most visited temple in the world, taking tens of thousands of people a day on the seventh hill of Tirupati. Its gold covered vimana stands over a sanctum whose image is said to have been there before recorded history. Hair offered here is collected and sold, and pays for much of the trust's work.

Respect and access

Entry requires signing a declaration of faith in the deity. That is the temple's rule and it is applied at the gate. There is a dress code: traditional dress is expected and is enforced. Phones and cameras are not permitted inside the queue complex. Do not photograph people who have been shaved.
