The journey in one line

17 stops in Israel and Palestine. Complete means all 17 visited.

People have been travelling to these places since at least the fourth century, when Egeria wrote down what she saw and where the local church took her. The route she describes is close to the one groups still follow: Jerusalem first, then Bethlehem, then north to the lake, then down to the river. Most of the sites are cared for by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, which has held that role since 1342. A few are looked after by other communities, and the Holy Sepulchre and the Nativity are shared between several churches at once. You do not need to be religious to come. Archaeologists, historians and travellers with no faith at all make the same circuit, and the custodians are used to all of them.

These are the places where a set of stories became geography. Whether a given stone is the exact one is a question scholars argue about site by site, and the custodians are usually frank about it. What is not in doubt is the continuity: people have come here, prayed here and written about it for more than sixteen hundred years, and the buildings record every layer of that.

Groups usually take a week: three or four days based in Jerusalem, one for Bethlehem, two or three in Galilee, and the Jordan on the way between them. Spring and autumn are mild. Christmas and Easter fill Bethlehem and the Old City, and dates differ between the Latin, Greek and Armenian calendars. Bethlehem, Beit Sahour and Qasr al-Yahud are reached through checkpoints and hours change at short notice.    Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   The church stands over the ground that early Christians identified as the place of the crucifixion and the tomb. It has been rebuilt many times since the fourth century. Six churches share the building under a long-standing arrangement, and the entrance door is opened each morning by two Muslim families who have held that role for centuries.

   The basilica interior, including Calvary, the Stone of Unction and the Edicule. Queues for the tomb itself can run long.

   Via Dolorosa

   طريق الآلام

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   A route through the Old City marked with fourteen stations, walked as a way of following the Passion. It begins near the Sanctuary of the Flagellation and ends inside the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The Franciscans lead a procession along it every Friday afternoon.

3. 3

   Church of All Nations

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   Also called the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in the 1920s over the rock that tradition names as the place of the prayer in Gethsemane, and it takes its name from the twelve countries that paid for it. The olive grove beside it is one of the oldest in the city.

4. 4

   Dominus Flevit

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   A small chapel on the western slope of the Mount of Olives, shaped like a teardrop for the Gospel scene in which Jesus weeps over Jerusalem. The window behind the altar frames the Old City and the Dome of the Rock. A Byzantine-era necropolis was found on the same slope.

   Church of the Pater Noster

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   A Carmelite convent and church on the Mount of Olives, on the site of the fourth-century Eleona basilica. Its cloister walls carry the Lord's Prayer on more than a hundred tiled panels in different languages, a collection that is still being added to.

   The Cenacle

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   The upper room on Mount Zion that Christian tradition since the fourth century has linked to the Last Supper and to Pentecost. The hall standing today is a Crusader-era Gothic room above the building known as the Tomb of David. It is a historic room rather than a working church.

   The upper hall itself. Entry is free and there is no regular liturgy here.

   Dormition Abbey

   Abtei Dormitio Beatae Mariae Virginis

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   A German Benedictine abbey church on Mount Zion, consecrated in 1910, on the spot where one tradition places the falling asleep of Mary. The crypt holds a sculpture of Mary at rest, ringed by mosaics given by different countries. The community sings the daily office in German.

   Church of Saint Anne and the Pool of Bethesda

   Église Sainte-Anne

   Jerusalem, Israel

   

   A Crusader church of about 1140, kept almost unchanged, next to the excavated pools that the Gospel of John calls Bethesda. The bare stone interior has a long reverberation and pilgrim groups often stop to sing in it. The archaeological area shows Roman and Byzantine building phases.

   Basilica of the Nativity

   Bethlehem, Palestine

   

   The oldest church in the region still in daily use, begun under Constantine and rebuilt in the sixth century. A silver star in the grotto beneath the altar marks the place tradition gives for the birth. Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic and Latin communities share the building.

    Shepherds' Field

    Beit Sahour, Palestine

    

    Fields east of Bethlehem remembered as the place where shepherds were told of the birth. The Franciscan chapel of 1954 is built like a tent, with a lantern that lets daylight fall into the centre. Byzantine and later monastic remains lie around it, and there is a Greek Orthodox site nearby.

    Basilica of the Annunciation

    Nazareth, Israel

    

    The largest church in the region, finished in 1969 over a grotto that has been venerated since at least the fourth century. Its courtyard and upper walls carry images of Mary sent by Catholic communities from around the world, each in its own national style.

    Capernaum

    Capernaum, Israel

    

    The lakeside village the Gospels describe as the base of Jesus' Galilean ministry. The excavated site holds a white limestone synagogue built over an earlier basalt one, and an octagonal church raised over a first-century house. The shore is a few steps away.

    Church of the Beatitudes

    Tabgha, Israel

    

    An octagonal church of 1938 on the hillside above the lake, one side for each of the beatitudes. Franciscan Missionary Sisters look after it and run the guest houses. The terrace looks down over the water towards Capernaum.

    Church of the Multiplication

    Tabgha, Israel

    

    A Benedictine church at Tabgha built in the 1980s on fifth-century foundations. Its floor mosaics of birds and plants are among the best preserved in the region, and a stone under the altar is remembered as the place of the loaves and fishes.

    Wedding Church at Cana

    Kafr Kanna, Israel

    

    A Franciscan church of 1906 in Kafr Kanna, the village usually identified with the Cana of the wedding story. Older walls and a fragment of Aramaic-inscribed mosaic survive underneath. Couples often come here to renew vows, which the parish arranges rather than the app.

    Basilica of the Transfiguration

    Basilica della Trasfigurazione

    Mount Tabor, Israel

    

    A basilica of 1924 by Antonio Barluzzi on the summit of Mount Tabor, the hill long identified with the Transfiguration. Two chapels flank the entrance for Moses and Elijah. The plain of Jezreel spreads out below on every side.

    The basilica and the summit terrace. The last climb is by shared taxi from the foot of the mountain.

17. 17

    Qasr al-Yahud

    قصر اليهود

    Jericho, Palestine

    

    The west-bank baptism site on the Jordan, north of the Dead Sea and east of Jericho. The river is narrow here and the far bank is Jordan. The area was mined for decades and was cleared and reopened in stages, so the marked paths matter.

    The riverside platform and the marked visitor area. Stay on cleared paths.

Respect and access

Cover shoulders and knees everywhere on this journey, including the outdoor sites. Services take priority over sightseeing; if a liturgy starts, stand aside or leave quietly. Ask before photographing people at prayer, and do not photograph inside the Cenacle or any chapel where a sign says not to. Several of these buildings are shared between churches that do not agree about much. Their arrangements are their own. Use the site names the custodians use, and treat questions of territory and ownership as outside what a travel record has any business settling.
