A first-century grave in a cemetery on the Vatican hill was venerated as Peter's from at least the second century. Constantine built over it in the 320s, on a slope, at enormous cost and difficulty, which is itself evidence of how firmly the site was believed in. The present basilica replaced Constantine's between 1506 and 1626. Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini each left a decision in it, and the arguments between them are still visible in the building. People come as pilgrims, as art historians and as tourists, all through the same door.

It is the largest church interior in the world and it does not read that way from inside, because everything is scaled up together. The putti holding the holy water stoups are the size of adults. Michelangelo's dome, finished after his death, set the pattern for domed capitols from Paris to Washington. Below, the Scavi excavations show the Roman street of tombs the whole building was placed over.

Entry to the basilica is free, through airport-style screening on the right side of the square. The queue is long from mid-morning; early or late afternoon is easier. The dome climb and the Vatican Grottoes are separate, and the Scavi tour under the basilica must be booked well in advance through the Excavations Office with a small group size. Papal audiences on Wednesdays close the square to ordinary visitors for much of the morning.

Respect and access

The dress code is enforced at the door and people are turned away every day: shoulders and knees covered, no hats inside. Keep quiet in the side chapels, several of which are reserved for prayer and closed to sightseers. Recording a visit says you went. It is not a Jubilee indulgence and not a pilgrim certificate; those are the Church's to grant and have their own conditions.
