Sapta Puri: the seven holy cities

A much quoted Sanskrit verse lists seven cities as mokshadayaka, giving release: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika and Dwaravati. In modern names those are Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Varanasi, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Dwarka. Unlike the Char Dham these are not temples. They are whole cities, and the claim is about the ground rather than a building. Six are in the north and centre. Kanchipuram is the one southern member.

The seven divide up between traditions. Ayodhya, Mathura and Dwarka are Vaishnava. Kashi and Ujjain are Shaiva. Kanchipuram claims both and adds the goddess. Haridwar is the Ganga. Holding them together as one list is a statement that these are not rival religions but one sacred map. Four of them, Haridwar, Ujjain, Prayagraj and Nashik, also host the Kumbh Mela, though Prayagraj and Nashik are not in this seven.

There is no season that suits all seven. The plains are hot from April to June. Haridwar is pleasant most of the year; Kanchipuram is best from November to February. A common approach is to take them in clusters: Ayodhya with Varanasi, Mathura with Haridwar, Ujjain on its own or with Omkareshwar, Dwarka with the Saurashtra coast, and Kanchipuram from Chennai. Each city has a principal precinct that functions as the target: Hanuman Garhi and the Janmabhoomi at Ayodhya, the Janmasthan at Mathura, Har Ki Pauri at Haridwar, the Vishwanath corridor and ghats at Varanasi, the Kailasanathar and Ekambareswarar temples at Kanchipuram, Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain and the Jagat Mandir at Dwarka.

   Ayodhya

   Ayodhya, India

   

   Ayodhya on the Sarayu is named in the Ramayana as the city of Rama and is the first of the seven holy cities. Its ghats, the Hanuman Garhi fort temple and the Kanak Bhawan are the older centres of visiting. The Ram Janmabhoomi temple opened in 2024 after a long and contested dispute.

   Mathura

   मथुरा

   Mathura, India

   

   Mathura on the Yamuna is held to be the birthplace of Krishna and is the second of the seven holy cities. The Shri Krishna Janmasthan complex, the Vishram Ghat and the wider Braj country around Vrindavan and Govardhan are what people come for. The Mathura Museum holds the Kushan sculpture found in the city.

   Haridwar

   Haridwar, India

   

   Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the hills for the plain and is the third of the seven holy cities. Har Ki Pauri is the main ghat, where an oil lamp ceremony is held at dusk. It is one of the four cities where the Kumbh Mela is held.

   Varanasi

   Varanasi, India

   

   Varanasi, called Kashi, is the fourth of the seven holy cities and among the oldest continuously lived in cities anywhere. Eighty odd ghats step down to the Ganga along a six kilometre curve. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are cremation ghats and are part of what the city is for.

   Kanchipuram

   Kanchipuram, India

   

   Kanchipuram is the only southern member of the seven holy cities and the one that counts for both Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions. The Kailasanathar temple is early Pallava work in sandstone, and the Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja Perumal temples are the large later complexes. The city has woven silk for as long as it has built temples.

   Ujjain

   उज्जैन

   Ujjain, India

   

   Ujjain, called Avantika, is the sixth of the seven holy cities and stands on the Shipra. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is its centre, with the Bhasma Aarti before dawn. Ujjain was the reference meridian for Indian astronomy and is one of the four Kumbh Mela cities.

7. 7

   Dwarka

   દ્વારકા

   Dwarka, India

   

   Dwarka is the seventh of the holy cities and the only one that is also a Char Dham seat. The town sits where the Gomti meets the Arabian Sea and is built around the Jagat Mandir. Offshore work has found submerged structures that people connect to the city of the Mahabharata.

Respect and access

Varanasi's cremation ghats are working funeral grounds. Families are grieving a few metres away. Photography there is unwelcome and often forbidden, and people who offer to guide you closer are usually asking for money. Ayodhya and Mathura both have heavy security around contested sites. Follow the screening rules without argument. Several southern inner sanctums are open to Hindus only. That restriction is the temple's to make.

A place of reflection

This is a memorial or a site of atrocity. Visitors are asked to be quiet, to follow the custodian's guidance on photography, and to treat it as somewhere people grieve.
