A takht is a seat of authority. There are five, and together they carry the temporal side of Sikh life, as distinct from worship. Akal Takht at Amritsar is the first and highest, raised by Guru Hargobind in 1606 facing the Harmandir Sahib. Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur is where the Khalsa was founded in 1699. Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo is where the final recension of the Guru Granth Sahib was dictated. Patna Sahib is Guru Gobind Singh's birthplace and Hazur Sahib at Nanded is where he died. Three are in Punjab. One is in Bihar and one is in Maharashtra, which makes this a journey across most of India.

The Takhts issue hukamnamas, directives binding on the Panth. Decisions that shape Sikh life are announced from them. The set also traces the tenth Guru's life at both ends: born in Patna, Khalsa founded at Anandpur, died at Nanded. Damdama Sahib was recognised as the fifth Takht only in the twentieth century, and the recognition was contested at the time.

Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo can be done as one Punjab trip over three or four days. Patna and Nanded are separate journeys and are usually reached by train or by air to Patna and Nanded. Punjab is comfortable from October to March. Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib, the day after Holi, is the largest gathering there. All five run sarai accommodation for pilgrims at low cost.

   Akal Takht

   ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ

   Amritsar, India

   

   Guru Hargobind raised the Akal Takht in 1606 facing the Harmandir Sahib, as a seat of temporal authority beside a place of worship. It is the first and highest of the five Takhts and hukamnamas are issued from here. The building was destroyed in 1984 and rebuilt.

   What counts as a visit

   The Akal Takht building and the parikrama of the Golden Temple complex around it.

   Access

   Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib

   Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib is where Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699. Weapons connected with the Guru are kept and shown here. Hola Mohalla is held at Anandpur the day after Holi.

   Takht Sri Damdama Sahib

   ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਮਦਮਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ

   Talwandi Sabo, India

   

   At Talwandi Sabo Guru Gobind Singh rested after the Anandpur and Chamkaur battles and dictated the final recension of the Guru Granth Sahib. The place is called the Guru's Kashi for the learning that followed. It was recognised as the fifth Takht in the twentieth century.

   Takht Sri Harmandir Ji, Patna Sahib

   ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਜੀ

   Patna, India

   

   Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna in 1666 and spent his first years here. The Takht stands on the site of the house and holds relics from his childhood. The present domed building was put up in the twentieth century after an earlier one burned.

   Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib

   ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ

   Nanded, India

   

   Nanded is where Guru Gobind Singh died in 1708 and where he passed the succession to the Guru Granth Sahib. The Takht stands over the place of his cremation. Its practice keeps older customs that differ from Punjab in some details.

Respect and access

Heads are covered by everyone, and scarves are available at the entrance. Footwear goes to a counter and feet are washed on the way in. Tobacco and alcohol are not permitted on the premises and neither is carrying them in. Langar is offered to anyone who comes and sitting to eat is welcome. Do not treat it as a free meal for tourists, and do not photograph people eating.
