Touba exists because Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba founded it in 1887, and the Great Mosque exists because he is buried under it. Everything else in the city followed. The Grand Magal commemorates his departure into exile in 1895 and brings several million people into Touba over a few days, which makes it one of the largest religious gatherings in Africa. Most people outside West Africa have never heard of any of this, which is the main reason it is on the list.

The Mouride order is a Senegalese Sufi movement that answered French colonial pressure with work, organisation and a refusal to fight, and it now shapes Senegalese economic and political life well beyond religion. The mosque is 103 metres long and its central minaret, Lamp Fall, is the tallest structure in Senegal. It was built and repeatedly extended by the community itself rather than by a state.

Touba is about 190 kilometres east of Dakar by road, roughly three hours outside Magal week and far longer during it. The city is governed under its own religious authority. The Magal date follows the Islamic calendar and moves through the Gregorian year. Accommodation during it is arranged through hosts rather than hotels.

Touba applies strict local rules: conservative dress, no alcohol, no tobacco, no music in public. These are the community's rules for its own city and they apply to everyone. Remove shoes at the mosque and follow the guides. Ask before photographing anyone, particularly during the Magal.
