Bodh Gaya is a small town in Bihar built around one tree. Under it, tradition says, Siddhartha Gautama sat down and did not get up until he understood. The present Bodhi tree is a descendant of the original, itself grown from a cutting taken to Sri Lanka in the third century BCE and brought back. The Vajrasana, the polished sandstone slab beside it, is the marker for the seat. Ashoka built here. So did the Guptas, the Palas, the Burmese, the British and, in the last century, most Buddhist countries on earth, each with a monastery in its own style along the road.

Of the four great places this is the one that people travel furthest for and stay longest at. Some come for a day and some for a retreat that runs for months. It is also a place where the different Buddhisms sit within a few hundred metres of each other, chanting in different languages at the same hours.

The season is October to March. Gaya airport takes direct flights from Bangkok, Yangon and Colombo in the winter and almost none in summer. The temple opens early and stays open late. Winter mornings are cold and the marble is freezing underfoot. January and February are the busiest, when teachings draw very large numbers.

   Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha is said to have reached awakening under the Bodhi tree. The brick temple beside the tree dates in its present form to the Gupta period and rests on a platform Ashoka is credited with building. The Vajrasana, a polished sandstone slab, marks the seat itself.

Respect and access

Footwear comes off at the gate. Phones and cameras have a fee or are restricted; check at the counter. People will be prostrating, chanting and sitting still for hours all around the temple. Walk around them, not through them, and do not photograph faces. The Bodhi tree enclosure has its own barrier and falling leaves are collected by the temple, not by visitors.
